Big update! It’s been a busy past two weeks for the Tiger of the White Sun team.
I had the tremendous honor to interview three veteran family members last week. Michael Bartling is the nephew of Bill Bartling, who was a member of the original American Volunteer Group and one of the Flying Tigers’ ace pilots! He was officially credited with five enemy planes destroyed in aerial combat as well as shared credit for a Japanese bomber.
Mr. Bartling had some amazing stories to tell about his uncle’s experiences in the war, and was kind enough to share a collection of family photos pertaining to Bill Bartling’s life at home and abroad.
I also had the opportunity to meet Denny Guan, the son of famed Chinese general Guan Linzheng. General Guan participated in the 1931 Defense of the Great Wall (for which he was awarded China’s highest military honor at the time), the Battle of Wuhan, and the Chinese victories at Taierzhuang and Changsha. I also had the chance to interview Mr. Guan’s wife, who is the daughter of Liu Yuzhang (another accomplished Chinese general who served as an adjutant to Guan Linzheng.) Truly an amazing family, and I’m very grateful to have been able to meet them!

And finally, our second location scout took us on a winding path through the Arroyo Seco near Pasadena. It proved to be a huge success, and we’re ecstatic to have all of our locations accounted for!

A video featuring the details of our project as well as my interviews with Michael Bartling and the Guan family will be coming soon. Stay tuned for audition results and other developments!
